Schaffer Lake is the quiet, scenic breather in the Lake O’Hara network—set in a small alpine basin beneath Mount Schaffer with rugged peaks and copper‑coloured quartzite cliffs around you. It’s not the headliner, and that’s the appeal: fewer people, plenty of atmosphere.

What you’ll see

Expect clear alpine water, meadows that pop with wildflowers in late summer, and larches that turn golden in early fall. Mount Schaffer looms above, with Mount Biddle and the McArthur Pass area nearby. It’s an easy place to linger, snack, and soak up the high‑country feel before tackling the next climb.

How it fits into your day

Most hikers pass Schaffer Lake en route to McArthur Pass and Lake McArthur. The trail network commonly uses a headwall above the lake to connect with the McArthur High/Low Level routes, making the lake a natural mid‑hike pause or turnaround if you’re not chasing the bigger viewpoints.

Wildlife and stewardship

The surrounding meadows are sensitive and part of a wildlife corridor. Marmots, pikas, alpine birds—and occasionally mountain goats—are typical of the broader O’Hara region. Stay on marked trails and give animals space.

Practical notes

Access to the O’Hara area is strictly regulated by Parks Canada: reserve the shuttle or be ready for a long approach on foot.
There are no facilities at Schaffer Lake—no toilets, tables, or treated water. Treat your own water and pack out everything.
Park rules apply: no drones; no fishing or watercraft here.
Expect limited to no cell coverage.

Conditions to expect

Snow can linger into midsummer near the lake and on the headwall above it; early season can be muddy, and mosquitoes like the still water.

Best time to visit

Late July–September for dry trails and wildflowers.
Mid–late September if you’re chasing larch color.
Go early in the day for calmer water and quieter trails; weekends are busier due to shuttle demand.
