Overview
A simple roadside stop with a big payoff for rail and history nerds. The Upper Spiral Tunnel Viewpoint looks across the valley to Cathedral Mountain, where CP Rail’s century-old spiral tunnel lets trains gain elevation inside the mountain. When a long freight comes through, you can sometimes spot the same train in two places at once.
What You’ll See
- The upper tunnel portal cut into Cathedral Mountain, opposite the pullout across the Kicking Horse River valley.
- Freight trains entering and exiting at different elevations; with a long consist, parts of the train can appear in multiple portals simultaneously.
- A few interpretive panels that sketch the track layout so you know what you’re looking at.
Why It’s Unique
The Spiral Tunnels (completed in 1909) were Canada’s elegant fix for the dangerously steep “Big Hill” over Kicking Horse Pass. This upper viewpoint is the relaxed, less-busy spot to watch that engineering in action without the tour bus crowds common at the lower viewpoint.

- Location: About 2.3–3 km up Yoho Valley Road from the Trans‑Canada Highway.
- Facilities: None. No restrooms, water, or shelter. Parking is just a small roadside pullout that’s easy to miss.
- Distance to the action: The portal is across the valley—bring a zoom lens or binoculars for the best look.
- Trains: There’s no posted schedule. Roughly a couple dozen trains run daily, but arrivals are luck-of-the-draw, so plan to linger.
Wildlife
Wildlife isn’t the draw here. You might notice birds or ground squirrels around the pullout, but you’re mainly here for trains and views.

- Drive Yoho Valley Road slowly—signage appears late and the pullout is small.
- Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens; the tunnel is a fair distance away.
- Give it 15–30 minutes to improve your odds of catching a train.
- If you want deeper interpretive detail, pair this stop with the lower viewpoint afterward.
Best Time to Visit
Open 24 hours. It’s typically quiet most of the day, especially compared to the lower viewpoint. For photos, early and late light is kinder than midday glare. Trains run at all hours, so any time can work—patience is the real key.
