Stump Cross Caverns

Overview

About Stump Cross Caverns

Why stop

  • Named chambers and fossil history give the walk a strong sense of place

Heads up

  • Tight, low sections and a chilly 7°C underground
A privately run show cave on the border of the national park, signposted off the B6265 between Pateley Bridge and Grassington. It is a self-guided underground walk of about 45 to 50 minutes through natural passages, so you set your own pace rather than following a guide.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Go earlier in the day for the lit walk if you want to look closely at the formations or take photographs. Later in the day the lights are switched off and ultraviolet torches are supplied, which makes the calcite glow but hides the detail, so pick the version you actually want. It works well as a wet-weather or hot-weather plan because the temperature underground never changes. Allow extra time if you also want the family activities and the cafe, and expect company: this is a popular stop and the passages are tight enough that you will be sharing them.

The route drops through 65 steps with handrails onto marked walkways, with discreet installed lighting picking out the formations. Ceilings are low in places, some sections are narrow, and the floor is uneven, so hard hats and torches are handed out and worn for good reason. It holds steady at around 7 C all year, which feels sharp within a few minutes of going down.

The operator has named the shapes along the way, among them The Butcher's Shop, The Twins, the Chamber of Pillars, and The Cathedral with its Organ and Wedding Cake. Reindeer Cavern, opened to visitors in 2000, connects to the site's fossil record of reindeer, bison, Arctic fox and a wolverine skull found in 1922.

The limestone began as marine sediment roughly 300 million years ago, and water has been carving the passages for more than 500,000 years. The caverns were found in 1860 by lead miners William and Mark Newbould, and the site opened to the public in the early 1900s.

Practical accessCome by car; there is no wheelchair access anywhere on site and no lift.

Come by car; there is no wheelchair access anywhere on site and no lift. Pushchairs and baby back carriers are not allowed underground, though front carriers are. Dogs on leads are welcome in the centre, cafe and shop but not in the caves, guide dogs excepted. Wear a warm layer whatever the forecast, and footwear with grip that you do not mind getting wet after rain.
