Asticou Brook Path

This is a short, peaceful footpath tucked beside a babbling brook near Northeast Harbor, starting across from the Asticou Azalea Garden on Peabody Drive (Route 3). Expect a cool canopy, soft water sounds, and the occasional peek toward manicured grounds as you skirt the edge of the historic inn and garden area.

Plan on about 1.0 mile total if you walk it out-and-back (roughly 0.5 miles one way). It’s an easy, gently graded path with a few steps and a mostly packed-dirt tread. Elevation gain is minimal (under 100 feet), and the shaded setting makes it a refreshing leg-stretcher on warm days. This is not a destination hike for views or mileage—think tranquil connector and garden-adjacent amble.

Keep your eyes down as much as up: the damp, wooded valley is great for spotting fungi, including slime molds and puffball mushrooms. The brook traces a glacially carved little valley framed by granite outcrops—classic Mount Desert Island terrain, just on a gentler scale.

Best time to hike: It’s enjoyable year-round. Spring and summer bring lush greenery (and the nearby gardens in bloom), fall delivers color in the trees, and winter offers quiet if you’re prepared for ice and snow. For fewer people and easier parking, aim for early morning or late afternoon, especially in peak season.

Tips: Combine this walk with a visit to the Asticou Azalea Garden for a richer outing. Wear sturdy shoes—sections near the brook can get muddy and slick after rain. Dogs are typically allowed on the path on leash, but they’re not permitted inside the adjacent formal gardens; follow posted rules.

Bottom line: If you’re already in Northeast Harbor or visiting the gardens, this is a lovely, low-effort add-on. If you want mountain views or a workout, pick a longer summit trail elsewhere in the park.
