Overview

Cobblestone Bridge is the granddaddy of Acadia’s carriage-road bridges—built in 1917 and the first in the system. It’s also the only one faced with rounded cobblestones instead of the granite used elsewhere, which makes it a standout even if you’ve seen other stone bridges in the park.

What makes it unique

You’ll find a semi-circular 28-foot stone arch over Jordan Stream, with the year “1917” carved into the keystone. The approaches flare gracefully to match the curve of the carriage road, and tower-like buttresses create little lookouts over the stream. It’s craftsmanship you can admire up close—simple, beautiful, and unlike any other bridge on the network.

Setting and what you’ll see

The bridge sits in a shaded, tranquil stretch of Jordan Stream between Jordan Pond and Seal Harbor. Expect the soft rush of water, dappled forest light, and that textured cobblestone masonry begging for photos. In autumn, the canopy lights up and the stonework really pops.

Getting there

There’s no vehicle access. Walk, bike, or ride a horse along the carriage roads, or take the Jordan Stream Trail; from Jordan Pond House it’s roughly a mile by carriage road. There are no facilities at the bridge—nearest restrooms and food are back at Jordan Pond House.

Wildlife

Along the stream and forest you might notice songbirds, squirrels and chipmunks, and occasionally deer. The stream can draw amphibians and small aquatic life—nothing dramatic, but it adds to the calm vibe.

Photography tips

Morning through mid-day light shows the arch and stone textures well, and the buttress lookouts give solid angles on the span and the stream below. Fall color is the bonus round.

Best time to visit

Time of day: Mornings are best for both light and fewer people.
Season: Fall foliage is prime; summer is pleasant thanks to shade but bring repellent.
Crowds: Expect steady foot and bike traffic in peak season—weekdays and early starts help.

This is a low-key, high-reward stop—perfect to pair with a Jordan Stream stroll or a longer carriage-road loop. Treat the historic masonry with care and stick to the established paths and lookouts.
