Cobblestone Bridge is a historic carriage-road bridge over Jordan Stream near Jordan Pond, just outside Acadia National Park’s boundary. It’s a worthwhile stop if you’re already exploring the Jordan Stream routes or enjoy old road engineering; the rounded-stone arch is the reason to come.
Reach the bridge on foot from Jordan Pond House along the carriage roads or by the Jordan Stream Path. Carriage roads are auto-free, so this isn’t a drive-up stop. The bridge stands on Land & Garden Preserve property, and bikes aren’t permitted on the lower Preserve approach. Follow posted signs and stay on established routes.
Built in 1917, it was the first of 17 bridges constructed along 57 miles of carriage road on Mount Desert Island. The 28-foot semicircular arch is reinforced concrete faced with rounded cobbles; the year is carved into its keystone. Round buttresses at the ends provide views upstream and downstream, including views of the arch from above.
Look for the rounded cobbles across the arch and spandrel wall, with granite trim tracing the curve. For a photo, include the whole span and the rocky stream below it. When water is flowing, a small cascade can sit beneath the bridge.
