Kurt Diederich's Climb

If you like Acadia’s old-world pathcraft, this one’s a gem. Kurt Diederich’s Climb is a short, very steep stone stairway on the east side of Dorr Mountain, starting by The Tarn/Sieur de Monts area and linking up with Kane Path below and Schiff Path above. The segment itself is about 0.3 miles one way, gaining roughly 350 feet almost entirely on hand-laid granite steps. Think classic Acadia stonework, shaded forest, and a quick cardio spike.

Know what you’re signing up for: there aren’t big views on the Climb itself. The payoff comes if you continue on adjoining routes (like Schiff Path) toward Dorr’s open ledges. As a standalone, it’s a beautiful, historic stair climb through mossy boulders and ferns on pink granite—quiet, contemplative, and far less trafficked than the park’s headliners.

Footing matters here. Those granite steps can be slick after rain, and downright icy in winter. It’s not a ladder route, but it’s relentlessly steep with no handrails, so bring real traction in cold months and sturdy footwear year-round. Expect humidity and insects in summer; the forested shade helps, but bug spray helps more.

Route tips: Park at the Sieur de Monts area, follow the Kane Path by The Tarn to the signed start, ascend Kurt Diederich’s Climb, then choose your adventure—continue via Schiff Path toward Dorr for views, or build a loop with other Dorr-area paths. If you want panoramic payoffs with similar craftsmanship, continuing above the Climb is the move.

Best time to hike: Spring and fall are prime—cooler temps, fewer bugs, and (in fall) excellent foliage. Summer is fine thanks to shade, but expect humidity and insects. Winter is possible with microspikes; use caution on ice-polished steps.
