Owl Rock

Overview

A freestanding sandstone spire in the Garden of Eden area, Owl Rock rises roughly 100 feet and sits just off the Windows Road turnoff. It’s easy to spot from the small Garden of Eden parking area and even easier to walk up to for a closer look.

Why it’s special

For climbers, this is a rite-of-passage tower—often cited as one of the easiest true desert towers in the Moab area. For everyone else, it’s a striking roadside landmark that glows beautifully at sunset, with big views toward Elephant Butte and the Windows Section.

What you’ll see and do

• Non-climbers: Park, wander the open slickrock, and photograph the spire against wide-open desert scenery. It’s a quick, satisfying stop between Balanced Rock and the Windows/Double Arch.
• Climbers: The standard trad route is about 90 feet (often listed 5.8). Expect a popular line, polished holds in spots, and soft Entrada sandstone—helmets and thoughtful gear placements matter. Morning shade and afternoon sun are the norm.

Getting there

Use the Garden of Eden parking area along the Windows Section spur road. From the lot, it’s only a few hundred feet of easy, cross-country walking to the base. The tower stands ESE of the parking area.

Practical notes

• Amenities: Don’t expect much—no water, no restrooms, no picnic tables. Just a small parking/pullout and open wandering on rock.
• Crowds: This route sees a lot of action. Have patience or a backup plan (nearby Bullwinkle Tower is an option if you’re climbing).
• Gear (for climbers): A standard desert rack with doubles up to #4 cams is commonly recommended; rock is soft and placements can be finicky.
• Permits: Climbers are reported to need a park climbing permit—handle that before you rope up.

Wildlife

No specific wildlife notes tied to Owl Rock, though the broader area supports lizards, small mammals, various birds, and occasional bats.

Best time to visit

• Photographers: Late afternoon to sunset for warm light on the tower.
• Climbers: Early morning for cooler temps, less-crowded starts, and some shade. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable conditions; summer sun here is intense.
