Overview

If you want maximum wow for minimal effort, The Windows Section delivers. In just over two square miles you can stand beneath North and South Window (aka the Spectacles), wander to Turret Arch, and pop across the lot to Double Arch. It’s one of the park’s most scenic and popular spots—expect classic red-rock vistas and nonstop photo ops.

What You’ll See

North Window and South Window: side-by-side openings with sweeping desert views.
Turret Arch: a castle‑like arch that’s easy to reach from the same loop.
Double Arch: just across the parking area; two massive spans sharing one end.
Surrounding formations include Elephant Butte, Garden of Eden, and the Parade of Elephants.

Trails and How to Explore

Windows Loop Trail: about 1–1.2 miles with roughly 150 feet of gain—stone steps, some uneven rock, and sand. The first stretch is flat and hard‑packed before the steps begin.
Primitive Trail (0.7 miles): loops behind the Windows for unique angles and fewer people. It’s sandy/rocky and marked by cairns; keep an eye on the route.

Photography

Golden hour is prime. Early and late light flatters the arches, and the park highlights winter–spring sunsets here. Morning also helps with parking and thinner crowds.

Geology Snapshot

These arches are carved from Entrada Sandstone. The Windows are parallel openings formed in a weaker layer, sculpted largely by wind‑blown sand over time—hence the dense concentration of “rock windows” here.

Wildlife and Plants

You may spot desert lizards and ravens, with small mammals or the occasional mule deer moving more at dawn and dusk. Pinyon pine and juniper dot the red‑rock scene.

Logistics and Amenities

There’s a paved parking lot, trailhead, and a vault toilet. No water, food, or stores—bring everything you need. Shade is scarce, and summer heat can be intense, so plan accordingly. During busy seasons, vehicle entry to the park may require a timed‑entry reservation; check current NPS guidance.

Best Time to Visit

Time of day: Arrive early or come late afternoon to dodge crowds and get the best light.
Season: Winter into spring often brings standout sunsets and cooler temps.
Day of week: Weekdays are generally calmer than weekends.
