Overview

North Window Arch anchors the Windows Section—a compact, dramatic cluster of arches that delivers big scenery for minimal effort. Paired with South Window, the two are nicknamed "The Spectacles" when viewed together. From beneath North Window, you’ll gaze out over sculpted desert and neighboring formations.

What You'll See

  • A massive Entrada Sandstone opening carved into a fin, with sweeping desert views.
  • Easy add-ons: South Window and Turret Arch sit just minutes away on the same loop.
  • The classic composition: Turret Arch perfectly framed through North Window.

Trail and How to Explore

From the Windows trailhead, it’s a very short, well‑marked walk with stone steps to stand right under North Window. Most visitors combine it with the 1‑mile Windows Loop linking South Window and Turret Arch. For a quieter feel, return via the primitive trail behind the arches.

Photography Notes

Sunrise lights up Turret Arch through North Window for the signature shot; sunset paints the fins warm and can add a La Sal Mountains backdrop in cooler months. Arrive early for room to compose and fewer people.

Wildlife and Desert Life

Keep an eye out for lizards warming on sunlit rock, ravens or the occasional hawk overhead, and quick ground squirrels. Hardy desert plants and gnarled junipers add texture around the fins.

Practicalities

The Windows Section trailhead has parking and vault toilets, but no water or food—bring what you need. Parking fills fast; if the Windows lot is full, there’s another lot at Double Arch and a connecting trail between the two. Seasonal timed‑entry reservations may apply; check the NPS site before you go.

Best Time to Visit

  • Time of day: Sunrise for iconic photos and lighter crowds; late afternoon into sunset for warm light. Mid‑day is busiest.
  • Day of week: Weekdays are typically calmer than weekends.
  • Season: Popular year‑round; winter and shoulder seasons can offer softer light and fewer people, but plan for cold mornings.

Pros

  • Iconic photo of Turret Arch through the opening
  • Very short walk from the Windows trailhead

Cons

  • Often crowded, especially mid‑day
  • Hot and exposed with little shade

Tips

  • Arrive before sunrise for the Turret Arch–through–North Window composition.
  • If the Windows lot is full, park at Double Arch and walk the connecting trail.
  • Loop the area: North Window, South Window, and Turret Arch make a fast, rewarding circuit.
  • Bring plenty of water—there’s no drinking water at the trailhead.
