Pros & cons

Overview
Set in the Windows Section, South Window pairs with North Window in the same sandstone fin—together they’re nicknamed the "Spectacles." It’s big, photogenic, and an easy win: you’ll see multiple marquee arches with minimal effort.
Why It’s Special
South Window sits slightly higher than the surrounding desert floor, so the opening frames sweeping views toward Turret Arch and distant horizons. Many shooters prefer its angles—especially from the backside primitive trail—over its busier neighbor.
The Walk
A gentle gravel path with steps leads from the Windows trailhead to both North and South Window, plus a spur to Turret Arch. The full loop is about 1 mile with roughly 150 feet of gain. For a quieter perspective and the best "Spectacles" look at both Windows together, follow the Primitive Loop behind the arches and watch for cairns.
Photography
Golden hours shine here. Sunrise and sunset consistently deliver warm light through the opening and along the fin, and the primitive loop reveals striking compositions. Night on a new moon can be stellar for Milky Way viewing.
Wildlife
This area is about the rocks more than critters, but you may spot lizards and birds along the trail on warm days.
Amenities
At the Windows trailhead you’ll find a large parking area and vault toilets (no running water). There’s no food, store, or water fill—bring what you need.
Best Time to Visit
- Early morning or late evening for soft light and fewer people.
- Weekdays tend to be calmer than weekends.
- New moon nights are excellent for stargazing.
Know Before You Go
- The primitive loop is less traveled and can be confusing—follow cairns and go prepared.
- The area is fully exposed; bring water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes.
- Standard park entry fees apply. No dogs on park trails.
