Delicate Arch Upper Viewpoint Trail

Why go

If you want a real look at Delicate Arch without committing to the longer hike to its base, this is the smarter shortcut. It climbs quickly to a fenced overlook with a clear, side-on view across the amphitheater bowl—closer than the Lower Viewpoint and far better for photos.

The hike

From the Delicate Arch Viewpoint parking lot at the end of Delicate Arch Road, start on the paved path and take the left fork for the Upper Viewpoint (the right fork stays flat to the Lower Viewpoint). The upper route turns rocky and climbs steadily with stairs and uneven tread before topping out at a fenced overlook. It’s exposed the whole way, with little to no shade.

Total distance is about 1.0 mile round trip (0.5 miles each way). Expect a short but steady climb on dirt, gravel, and rock. Sturdy footwear helps.

What you’ll see

The payoff is a clean, elevated view of Delicate Arch perched on Entrada Sandstone above a deep bowl. It’s still about a mile away, so you won’t be under the arch—and you won’t get the straight-on “postcard” angle—but you will see the entire opening and surrounding slickrock in context, plus wide desert vistas with sparse high-desert vegetation.

Is it for you?

This is ideal if you’re short on time, managing energy in the heat, or hiking with kids who don’t need the full 3-mile trek to the arch itself. Those who want to stand beneath the arch (or get that classic front-on shot) should plan the separate Delicate Arch Trail instead.

Tips

• Start early or go late for cooler temps and softer light.
• Bring water and sun protection—there’s no shade.
• The overlook is fenced, which helps with kids and heights.
• If the main Delicate Arch Trailhead lot is slammed, the Viewpoint parking can be easier to snag.

Best time to hike

Spring and fall bring friendlier temperatures. Summer is brutally hot with radiant heat from the rock—plan dawn/dusk or skip midday. Winter is cooler and quieter, but snow/ice can make the upper steps slick.

• Pets aren’t allowed on this trail.
• No trail-specific permit, but Arches may require a timed-entry reservation during the seasonal system; check current NPS details before you go.
