Pros & cons
PROS
- Quick way to see Delicate Arch without the full 3-mile hike
- Better angle than the Lower Viewpoint and often quieter than the main trail
CONS
- View is distant across a canyon
- Hot, exposed route with no shade
Overview
Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint gives you that classic look at Delicate Arch without committing to the strenuous hike to its base. From the Delicate Arch Viewpoint parking area, a short, moderately steep path climbs to a clear, across-the-canyon vantage point where the arch sits perfectly framed on a sandstone fin.
What you'll see
- A direct but distant view of Delicate Arch perched on Entrada Sandstone above a broad bowl.
- Big desert panoramas with red rock formations and, on clear days, the La Sal Mountains as a backdrop.
Trail and logistics
- Distance and effort: About 0.5 miles round trip with roughly 150 feet of gain on a rocky, stepped path.
- Route: From the parking lot, take the initially paved path and follow the left fork for the Upper Viewpoint. If you only want a super quick peek, the Lower Viewpoint splits off earlier.
- Crowds: Typically lighter than the main Delicate Arch Trail, though the viewpoint can still be busy in peak season.
Photography and best time to visit
- Light: Early morning and late afternoon deliver softer light and better contrast on the arch. Midday is harsh and flat.
- Days: Weekdays are calmer than weekends when the entire area fills up fast.
- Gear: A zoom lens or binoculars makes a big difference from this distance.
Wildlife
Keep an eye out for lizards sunning on the rocks and ravens riding thermals. Early or late in the day you might spot small mammals or mule deer; in warm months, be mindful of snakes along the trail.
Make it more than a viewpoint
If parking is tight, swing by nearby Wolfe Ranch and the Ute petroglyphs and circle back. For a quieter photo, scramble a bit higher above the main Upper Viewpoint to find different angles and occasional pockets of shade among scattered trees.
