Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint Trail

If you want a real view of Delicate Arch without the full climb to its base, this short spur is the smart play. Starting from the Delicate Arch Trail parking area, follow the paved path and take the signed left fork toward the viewpoints. The first junction heads to the accessible Lower Viewpoint; continue on the left-hand path to climb the rocky ridge to the Upper Viewpoint. It’s an out-and-back of about 1.0 miles total, with a steady, sometimes stair-stepped incline and uneven rock underfoot.

The payoff is a clean, side-on look at Delicate Arch across the canyon—closer and higher than the Lower Viewpoint, but you’re still viewing it from a distance. Expect classic slickrock, sparse desert vegetation, and big-sky vistas that can include the La Sal Mountains when the air is clear. It’s quieter than the main Delicate Arch Trail, and the shorter effort makes it a great compromise for families or anyone not up for the steeper 3-mile trek to the arch itself.

Don’t expect shade—there’s essentially none—and the rock heats up fast. Bring water, wear sun protection, and time your visit for early or late light if photos are the priority. Morning and evening tend to be most flattering for the arch and surrounding sandstone. In winter, patches of ice can linger and make the climb slick.

Geology fans: You’re looking at Entrada Sandstone sculpted by eons of erosion. Delicate Arch itself is the park’s largest free-standing arch, with a light opening about 46 feet tall and 32 feet wide. From this vantage, you get context—how the arch sits above the slickrock bowl and the broader desert landscape—without the crowds that cluster beneath it.

Is it worth it? If you want the iconic arch in your sightline with far less effort and fewer people, yes. If your heart’s set on standing beneath the span, this isn’t a substitute—do the main Delicate Arch Trail. Otherwise, this viewpoint is a low-commitment win.

Best time to hike: Spring and fall have the friendliest temperatures. In summer, go early or late to dodge extreme heat. Winter is blissfully quiet but can be icy—take care on the rock.
