Windows Primitive Loop Trail

This is the quick-hit Arches experience: a 1.1–1.2 mile loop linking Turret Arch with the North and South Windows, plus an optional “primitive” return that swings behind the Windows for fresh angles and fewer people. It’s easy, family-friendly, and fully exposed to the sun, with roughly 150 feet of gentle ups and downs.

Route in a nutshell

Start at the large Windows parking area on Windows Road. Take the main, well-graded path to visit Turret Arch, then continue to North Window and South Window. From South Window, pick up the primitive loop (about 0.7 miles) to circle behind both Windows and reconnect near the trailhead. Terrain on the primitive section is sandy and rocky with a few mild scrambles and uneven footing—nothing technical, but strollers won’t cut it.

What you’ll see

Three marquee arches in minutes: Turret, North Window, and South Window. On clear days you’ll also snag wide-open views toward Elephant Butte and, in the distance, the La Sal Mountains. The rock here is Entrada Sandstone, sculpted by wind, water, and time—those sweeping alcoves and fins are erosion at work.

Crowds and flow

The main path is one of the park’s busiest, especially mid-day. The primitive loop peels away from the crowds and gives “backstage” perspectives that many skip. Some folks feel the primitive return doesn’t add much; I think it’s worth the extra steps if you want a quieter feel and different angles. If you prefer saving the solitude for last, hike clockwise and take the primitive section on your way back.

Best time to hike

Spring and fall are prime for tolerable temps. In summer, the lack of shade makes afternoons brutal—go at dawn or late afternoon for cooler air and softer light on the rock (photographers love both windows at golden hours). Year-round hiking is possible, but plan for full exposure in any season.

Logistics and tips

• Park at the Windows Trailhead; there are restrooms and a large lot, but it still fills fast during peak times.
• Bring water, sun protection, and real shoes; the primitive segment is uneven and sandy.
• The park runs a timed-entry reservation system seasonally—book ahead or arrive outside the reservation window.
• Keep kids close on the primitive section; stay on marked paths and follow cairns.
