Queens Garden

Easiest hoodoo descent with tunnels and the Queen Victoria hoodoo
Queens Garden, Bryce Canyon National Park
InsideBryce Canyon National Park

Overview

Queens Garden drops from Sunrise Point into the heart of the Bryce Amphitheater, threading between orange-pink hoodoos and through short, photogenic tunnels. It’s the gentlest way off the rim, which makes it a favorite first hike here. Expect big views up top and intimate, otherworldly rock shapes once you’re below the rim.

Route and Difficulty

  • Standalone outing: about 1.8 miles round trip with roughly 320 feet of elevation loss/gain.
  • Classic combo: link Queens Garden with Navajo Loop and a rim segment between Sunrise and Sunset Points for a compact, scenic circuit around 2.9 miles.
  • Trail feel: generally moderate with some steeper, loose sections on the return.

What You’ll See

  • Hoodoo highlights: the namesake Queen Victoria hoodoo and a cluster of sculpted spires known as the Queen’s Garden.
  • Rock tunnels: several short, carved passages add a playful twist to the scenery.
  • Vistas: wide amphitheater views on the descent and countless photo ops among the formations below.

Wildlife

Sightings are occasional but keep an eye out for birds and small mammals moving between pines and hoodoo alcoves.

Best Time to Visit

  • Time of day: start early to beat both heat and crowds; soft morning light flatters the hoodoos. Late afternoon can be lovely too, but expect more people.
  • Season: spring through fall offers the most reliable conditions; summer is busiest and hottest.
  • Weather watch: if thunderstorms build, avoid being below the rim—lightning is a real hazard here.

Tips for a Better Hike

  • The crowd-pleaser route is down Queens Garden from Sunrise Point and up Navajo Loop to Sunset Point—varied scenery, minimal backtracking.
  • Wear shoes with good traction; loose gravel and a few steeper grades make footing matter.
  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection; shade is limited below the rim.
  • Refill before you drop: water-fill stations and restrooms are at the rim near Sunrise and Sunset Points (some are seasonal).

Amenities (at the rim, not on the trail)

Parking, restrooms, and a general store sit near Sunrise Point; Sunset Point has restrooms and water as well. There are no facilities down in Queens Garden itself.

Pros

  • Easiest descent into the Bryce Amphitheater from Sunrise Point
  • Up-close hoodoos and fun rock tunnels, including Queen Victoria

Cons

  • Very popular; expect crowds in peak hours
  • Sun-exposed and gravelly; the climb back can feel taxing

Tips

  • Arrive before 9am or use the park shuttle to avoid parking crunches.
  • Do the classic combo: down Queens Garden from Sunrise, up Navajo Loop to Sunset.
  • Refill at rim water stations near Sunrise/Sunset (some are seasonal) before descending.
  • Wear grippy footwear; loose gravel makes the return climb slick in spots.
  • Start early to dodge heat and crowds; avoid the trail if thunderstorms build.
