Sunset Point

Sunset Point is one of four main overlooks into Bryce Amphitheater, a dense maze of orange and cream hoodoos along the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. You get the big view after a short paved walk, without hiking down; Thor’s Hammer rises from the Silent City almost directly below. I’d keep it near the top of the day: from here you can choose an easy rim stroll or a steep descent among the formations.

The overlook is about 150 metres from the parking area on a paved, nearly level path. The Rim Trail continues north for half a mile to Sunrise Point on another paved stretch with little elevation change; it’s the park’s most accessible trail segment, and leashed dogs are allowed there. Navajo Loop drops from the viewpoint into the amphitheater, but the switchbacks make the climb back to the rim strenuous.

The hoodoos are carved from the Claron Formation, limestone laid down roughly 50 million years ago in Lake Claron. Iron oxides color the lower Pink Member red, orange and yellow; manganese leaves pink and purple patches. The upper layers turn pale where those minerals are absent.

Rain and freeze-thaw weathering wear the soft rock away. Cracks widen into fins and windows, then leave isolated spires. At Sunset Point, that process has packed the amphitheater with narrow towers and bigger, cap-shaped formations.

Thor’s Hammer is nearly straight below the overlook, among the formations called the Silent City. To the north, Boat Mesa sits beyond the rim toward Sunrise Point. Farther east, the notched end of Table Cliff Plateau rises above the horizon; the tilted layers of Sinking Ship mark the Paunsaugunt fault.

Restrooms, drinking water, a picnic table and interpretive information are available at the viewpoint. There isn’t a food counter listed here; Bryce Canyon Lodge and the General Store are separate stops.

From the rim, look for its broad cap just below the edge. For a more separated view of the formation, continue down Navajo Loop toward Two Bridges, where it’s easier to pick out against the surrounding hoodoos.
