Cairnwell Pass is a high mountain crossing on the A93, topping out beside the Glenshee Ski Centre at roughly 684 meters. It’s a classic slice of Highland scenery: big skies, open moorland, and rolling, heather‑clad hills, all wrapped around a road that climbs decisively to the summit.

The Drive & Scenery

Expect sustained climbs with double‑digit gradients on the approaches, long sweeping bends, and those wide‑angle views that make you pull over for photos. About a mile south of the summit, the old alignment once tackled a notorious double‑hairpin (the legendary 1‑in‑3 is a myth; think closer to 1‑in‑6). The modern road bypasses it, but you can still trace sections of the former line on foot or carefully by bike.

At the summit, the ski centre provides large car parks, toilets, and a café for hot food and drinks. Parking policies vary (free short stays or included with lift tickets, with paid options otherwise), and limited overnight parking is allowed by contribution.

Road Conditions & Safety

This is an exposed, high pass: weather turns quickly. Winter can bring drifting snow—especially on the southern approach—plus ice and strong winds. Even in summer, temperatures and wind chill can surprise. Steep grades and moving traffic merit defensive driving and extra care for cyclists.
