Overview
The Cairnwell is a 933 m Munro perched above the Glenshee Ski Centre. It’s famous for being one of the easiest Munros to bag: you start high, follow clear tracks and ski service roads, and can be on the summit fast. Expect a practical, no‑nonsense hillwalk rather than a remote wilderness experience.
What You’ll See
From the top you get broad views over the Grampians and the Glenshee slopes—on a clear day, it’s big‑sky stuff. The summit isn’t pristine: there’s a cairn alongside radio masts, sheds, and ski infrastructure. If you’re sensitive to development on hills, you’ll notice it here.
Route Options
Most people start from the Glenshee Ski Centre car parks on the A93 and head straight up. A very popular day links three Munros—Carn Aosda → Carn a’ Gheoidh → The Cairnwell—on open, high ground. That round is commonly described as about 13 km and roughly 4.5 hours for many walkers. In summer, a chairlift operates from the ski centre, which can shorten the effort if you prefer.
