Loch Callater Circuit

Overview

A classic lower-level Cairngorms outing, the Loch Callater Circuit follows a good estate track up Glen Callater to a wild, mountain-ringed loch, then loops the shoreline for a fuller, more immersive day. Expect big skies, heather hills, and a real sense of space without committing to the high plateau. Total distance is about 7.5 miles (12 km) for the full circuit, typically taking 4–5 hours depending on stops and conditions.

Route Experience

From the Auchallater car park just south of Braemar, the route climbs gently on a well-made estate track beside the lively Callater Burn. The approach is straightforward and scenic, with rolling moorland and expanding views as the glen opens. At the loch, you’ll find quiet shorelines, picnic-worthy spots, and the historic Callater Stable bothy near the head of the water. To complete the circuit, continue around the loch and use the ford at its far end to cross the burn before returning on the opposite shore. If the water is high, skip the ford and simply return the way you came. Expect some rough, occasionally boggy lochside sections compared to the easy track in the glen.

Scenery, Geology, and Wildlife

Loch Callater sits in a classic glacial trough, with granite- and schist-derived hills showing the imprint of ice. It feels properly wild despite the good access. Keep an eye out for red deer on the slopes, grouse in the heather, darting mountain hares, and—if you’re lucky—golden eagles riding thermals above the rim of the glen.

Tips and Practicalities

Park at Auchallater (small fee for estate upkeep) and start directly from the A93-side track. There are no facilities on the route; bring everything you need and pack out what you bring in. The path is not waymarked, but navigation is easy to the loch in good visibility; take a map/GPS if you plan to wander further. Dogs are welcome but must be under close control—especially around livestock and during ground-nesting bird season. Water is plentiful from streams, but treat if unsure.

Best Time to Hike

Walkable year-round in settled weather, this is at its friendliest from late spring through early autumn when daylight is long and river levels are lower. Summer midges can be fierce near the water on still days. In winter, expect snow, ice, and biting wind down the glen—conditions can turn serious quickly, so go prepared or save the circuit for a better day.
