Northern Corries Path

Overview

This classic high-level circuit loops the rims of the Northern Corries above the Cairngorm Ski Centre, giving you front‑row views into Coire an t‑Sneachda, Coire an Lochain, and Coire Cas. Expect sweeping granite cliffs, big mountain drama, and huge vistas across the Cairngorm plateau and Rothiemurchus. It’s a serious hillwalk with moments right above cliff edges—spectacular, but not one to underestimate.

Distance, time, and difficulty

Plan on roughly 7 miles total (about 11–12 km) with around 700–750 m of ascent for the full loop, taking most hikers 4–6 hours. The early miles are on a superbly built path from the ski car park, but higher up the terrain turns rockier, and one section along the rim is pathless and exposed.

What it’s like out there

Early on, the stone‑built approach makes easy work of gaining ground, then you’re quickly into classic corrie country: steep granite amphitheatres, boulderfields, and airy edges. Views stretch over the Cairngorm massif and, on clear days, down to Loch Avon. It’s common to see climbers heading for the corrie cliffs in summer and winter. Wildlife can be a highlight—keep an eye out for Ptarmigan and Mountain Hare on the high ground and the occasional reindeer near Coire Cas.

Best time to hike

Late spring through early autumn is your sweet spot: longer days, less lingering snow, and clearer paths. Choose fair‑weather, lower‑wind days—this plateau gets hammered by wind, and it can be unpleasant or unsafe when it’s blowing. Winter is a mountaineering proposition only, with frequent snow, ice, and avalanche‑prone slopes.

Navigation and safety

Bring proper navigation. Intersecting paths near the ski area make it easy to drift, and mist can roll in fast. An OS map (Explorer OL 57 or Landranger 36) plus GPS is smart. Expect exposure near cliff edges, rapidly changing weather, and a pathless rim section—this is not a casual stroll. In poor conditions, consider cutting it short or descending via the ski area vehicle track.

Logistics and tips

Start at the Cairngorm Ski Centre (Coire Cas) car park; parking is paid and the base area has facilities when open. If you’re short on time, an out‑and‑back into Coire an t‑Sneachda delivers big scenery with much less commitment. Year‑round, pack windproofs and waterproofs—summer can still feel wintry up here. Keep dogs very close due to wildlife and steep drops.
