Cairngorm Mountain

Cairngorm Mountain is a mountain resort and ski area at Coire Cas, above Aviemore. Its signature trip is the funicular to Ptarmigan, where you get a high viewpoint, a landscape exhibition and food without climbing the whole way. It is a good choice if you want the mountain experience with a short ride; if your goal is to walk onto the summit, check the access rules before you plan around the train.

The funicular climbs about 1.97 km from the base at 635 m to Ptarmigan at 1,097 m, gaining roughly 462 m. The ride takes around five minutes in snowsports season and eight outside it. At the top are a 270-degree exhibition, learning zone, shop, restaurant and gin bar. The viewing terrace is weather dependent; when it is clear, look down toward Loch Morlich and across Strathspey toward the Grampian Mountains and Rothiemurchus. Access changes with the season and visitor system. Outside snowsports season, funicular passengers generally have to stay inside Ptarmigan station unless they join a guided walk. During snowsports season, visitors can go outdoors but must remain within the ski boundary. A train ticket does not by itself give access to a summit hike; hillwalkers reach the top on foot. Dogs cannot ride the funicular except assistance dogs; dogs brought up on foot may enter the facilities on a lead.

Commercial skiing took shape at Coire Cas in the 1950s. The funicular replaced the wind-sensitive White Lady chairlift: construction began in 1999 and the railway opened on 24 December 2001. Near the top, its route passes through a 250 m cut-and-cover tunnel. The ride is part of the story of how this exposed slope was made into a ski resort.

Coire Cas is the arrival point, with a surface car park, café, shop and public toilets. The base and top station buildings have lifts between levels, and the railway provides wheelchair access. The top can be much colder and windier than the car park, with visibility changing quickly, so the terrace and long views are not guaranteed.
