The 1-mile total loop circles the Badger Hole—the preserved cabin of South Dakota’s first poet laureate—while weaving through fragrant ponderosa pines. It’s an easy, low-commitment walk that’s more about atmosphere and story than big views.
Route and what you’ll see
Start near the Badger Hole cabin, where a small stream sets a peaceful tone. The path winds through thick pine forest with pockets of oak, climbs a single rocky hill (the loop’s high point), then eases back down on smooth tread. Along the way, interpretive plaques share vignettes from Badger Clark’s life and poetry. Keep your eyes up—bison have been seen in the area.
Logistics
Trailhead is about 1 mile south of Highway 16A on Badger Clark Road, near Legion Lake, using the Badger Clark Cabin parking area. The trail is a natural dirt singletrack with a short rocky section—fine for most hikers but not wheelchair/stroller accessible. No special permit for hiking, but a Custer State Park entrance pass is required. Leashed dogs are allowed. If you want to pad the day, the Centennial Trail passes near the cabin for easy mileage extensions, and there’s a short connector from the parking area to the Legion Lake Store.
History hit
Badger Clark lived and wrote here for over 30 years until 1957. In season (Memorial Day to Labor Day, roughly 10 a.m.–5 p.m.), volunteer rangers open the cabin for tours and questions—plan your timing to catch it; it elevates the whole experience.
Best time to hike
Late spring through early fall is ideal. Summer brings the cabin tours and the fullest interpretive experience, but also more visitors—go early for easier parking and quieter trails. Early fall offers pleasant temps, fewer crowds, and subtle color in the oaks.

This is a gentle forest loop with a strong sense of place. It’s not a “must-do” for mileage or views, but it’s a worthwhile, grounded stop—especially if you catch the cabin open or pair it with extra miles on the nearby Centennial Trail.
