Overview

A calm, high-country cirque lake perched above the Two Medicine basin, No Name Lake feels like a hush in the middle of big scenery. You get classic Glacier color—clear to turquoise water under steep walls—with fewer people than the headline spots.

Getting There

Most folks hike from Two Medicine’s North Shore Trailhead via the Dawson Pass Trail, then follow a signed spur to the lake and its backcountry campground. Plan on roughly 9.7 miles round trip and about 1,300 feet of gain—moderate, with a few steeper stretches. In summer, the Two Medicine tour boat can ferry you across the main lake to trim off a few miles; just mind the return times.

What You’ll See

The lake sits in a rocky bowl below Mount Helen, with colorful layered bedrock and classic Glacier shapes carved by ice. Expect big views on the approach and a small, pebbly shoreline that’s perfect for a quick break or a very brisk dip. Shade is limited right at the water.

Geology Snapshot

Two Medicine is a showcase of Glacier’s Belt Supergroup rocks—greens and reds in the lower slopes and pale cliffs towering above—shaped into U‑valleys and bowls by ancient glaciers. No Name Lake itself is a textbook cirque tarn tucked beneath those cliffs.

Wildlife

This is prime habitat for moose and both black and grizzly bears. You’ll often see sign even when you don’t see the animals. Carry bear spray, make noise in brushy sections, and give wildlife plenty of space.

Camping

There’s a designated backcountry campground right at the lake (permits required). Expect minimal infrastructure and a pit toilet; pack out all trash and store food properly.

Trail Conditions and Comfort

Winds are common higher up and weather changes fast—bring layers and sun/wind protection. Bugs can be feisty in midsummer; a head net or solid repellent helps. Cell coverage is spotty to nonexistent, so download maps before you go.

Short on time? Pair the lake with the boat shuttle for a quicker out‑and‑back. Got extra gas in the tank? Continue toward Dawson Pass for Continental Divide views, or tack on the Twin Falls spur.

Best Time to Visit

June through September is the sweet spot, but expect lingering snow early season and cool winds any day. Start early for easier parking, calmer conditions, and quieter shores. Morning light flatters the climb; late afternoon can be lovely at the lake with fewer people. In 2025, no timed‑entry reservation is required to access Two Medicine; a standard park entry pass is still needed.
