Why it’s special
A tiny frontier-era cabin with a giant story, Buckey O’Neill Cabin sits right on the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village. It’s the park’s oldest surviving historic structure and a rare way to sleep inside living history—folded into the Bright Angel Lodge complex with the canyon practically at your doorstep.
What you’ll see
From the rim-side porch area you get immediate, wide-open canyon views—layers of stone, shifting light, and often the Bright Angel Trail tracing into the depths. The cabin’s log walls, rough mortar chinking, and native stone chimney showcase true 1890s craft, not a replica. There’s on-site interpretive info that explains why this little building matters.
A quick history hit
William Owen “Buckey” O’Neill built the two-room office-and-bunkhouse here in 1895 while championing canyon tourism and trail improvements. After O’Neill’s death in 1898, the cabin became part of early rim lodging. Decades later, architect Mary Jane Colter wove the pioneer structure into Bright Angel Lodge, preserving it as a distinctive guest accommodation.
