This is the mellow, car‑free slice of the South Rim you’re looking for. The Hermit Road Greenway is a paved, multi‑use path that parallels the rim between Monument Creek Vista and Hermits Rest, with constant canyon views and none of the traffic stress. It’s designed for walkers, runners, cyclists, and wheelchairs, and it feels blissfully serene compared to busier village sections.

Length is about 2.0 miles one way (4.0 miles out‑and‑back if you return the same way). The surface is smooth asphalt and generally level, but remember you’re moving around 7,000 feet—easy grades can feel a touch spicier at altitude. Expect stretches of sun exposure with occasional benches and partial shade.

Highlights are simple and spectacular: sweeping vistas right off the path and a stop at Pima Point, where on quiet days you can often see—and sometimes hear—the Colorado River’s rapids far below. The route ends at historic Hermits Rest, which has restrooms, a snack bar, a gift shop, and the corridor’s lone water bottle filling station—an easy turnaround and a comfortable breather.

Logistics are straightforward: ride the free Red Route shuttle to Monument Creek Vista to start, then walk or bike the greenway to Hermits Rest and shuttle back. The trail is separated from Hermit Road (which is closed to private vehicles most of the year), and shuttle stops give you bailout options if you want to shorten things. Bikes can go on shuttle racks, so it’s easy to mix riding and riding the bus.

Tips: bring plenty of water and sun protection—shade is limited and the high elevation dries you out fast. In summer, go early or late for cooler temps and better light; sunsets near Pima Point can be gorgeous without as many people. In winter, expect occasional snow or ice on the pavement. If shuttle lines are long at the transfer station, consider walking a bit between stops—you’ll trade waiting for views.

Bottom line: if you want big South Rim scenery with minimal effort and maximum calm, this short greenway segment is a winner. For a longer day, you can link other rim segments along the Hermit Road corridor using the shuttle.

Pros

  • Paved, car‑free path separated from Hermit Road for a quiet rim experience
  • From Pima Point you can sometimes see and even hear the Colorado River’s rapids

Cons

  • Only water refill is at Hermits Rest—plan ahead for sun and exposure
  • Shuttle waits can build during peak times; some segments are fully exposed

Parking

Park in Grand Canyon Village and take the free Red Route shuttle to Monument Creek Vista; Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles most of the year. Shuttle racks carry bikes.

Caution

High elevation, limited shade, and only water at Hermits Rest; expect summer heat, winter ice, and potential shuttle delays.
