Point Sublime

Point Sublime is a remote overlook on Grand Canyon's North Rim, beyond the paved scenic drives on rough forest roads. A broad, nearly 270-degree canyon panorama is the reason to make the trip. It suits visitors who want the backcountry drive as much as the view. Treat the approach as a high-clearance 4WD outing with little or no cell service for much of the way. The route has shifted since the 2025 fire, so check the current legal road with the park or Kaibab National Forest before setting out.

In June 2026, the route reported open came from Jacob Lake on AZ-67, then Forest Roads 22, 270, 223 and 268; roughly 18 miles were unpaved after the turnoff. Confirm that approach is still open before you go. Download offline maps while you still have service, and don't rely on older W1 directions without checking them against current access information.

From the rim, canyon walls and mesas recede in layers across an almost 270-degree panorama. Give yourself time to turn along the overlook instead of taking one quick look across a single section. For a photo, use a wide frame that holds several layers of cliff and mesa; the stacked walls give the view its scale.

The park lists Point Sublime (NH1) as a Threshold backcountry use area with designated-site camping. Overnight camping requires an advance backcountry permit. A 2026 visit account describes two sites, one near the rim and one among the trees, plus a composting vault toilet for campers and picnic tables at the viewpoint. Potable water and trash service were not reported, so bring all the water you need and pack out your trash. The toilet is a camper facility; day visitors shouldn't count on it.
