Pros & cons

PROS

  • Patrolled swimming zone in peak summer and busy weekends
  • Foreshore facilities right by the sand: parking, toilets, showers, BBQs

CONS

  • Peak‑season dog restrictions on the main section (9am–7pm)
  • Weekend afternoons get crowded, especially Saturdays
  • Surf and currents can be rough outside the flagged area

Overview

Apollo Bay Beach is the in‑town stretch of sand fronting the foreshore, steps from shops and the Visitor Information Centre with the harbour at one end. Expect soft sand, clear water on good days, and an easygoing vibe that makes this a natural pit stop along the drive.

Amenities right by the sand

  • Free foreshore parking near the Surf Life Saving Club and around the Visitor Information Centre.
  • Public toilets at the Visitor Information Centre, plus additional foreshore toilets.
  • Outdoor beach showers near the Foreshore Playground and another set by the golf‑club carpark at the harbour end.
  • The Foreshore Reserve has free electric BBQs, picnic tables, shaded areas, a popular playground and a skate park across the main street.
  • Open 24 hours.

Swimming and safety

Much of this coast faces Bass Strait, which can be rough—treat the surf with respect. The beach is patrolled by the Surf Life Saving Club during peak summer periods and popular weekends; when patrols are on, swim between the red–yellow flags.

Dogs and local rules

From December 24 to April 30, dogs are not allowed 9am–7pm on the main section between Marriners Lookout Road and the harbour. Outside those times/areas, rules vary—always follow the signs at beach entries.

Best time to visit

Crowds swell on weekends, with Saturday peaking from roughly 12–5 pm. For space to spread out, aim for early mornings or weekdays. If you’re road‑tripping on a Saturday, a pre‑10 am dip keeps things easy.

Good to know

  • Weather flips quickly here—pack a light wind/rain layer even on blue‑sky days.
  • The harbour precinct is being upgraded, with a new public toilet slated by June 2026.
  • The harbour is a pleasant stroll; it’s a local spot for fishing and squid when conditions suit.
