Overview

Blanket Bay Lookout isn’t a standalone, serviced platform—think of it as a simple coastal perch reached from the Blanket Bay day-use area and campground. The payoff is classic Otways scenery: wave-cut reef, turquoise water, and heath-fringed cliffs. It’s a low-effort add-on if you’re picnicking or camping at Blanket Bay, and a worthwhile pause on the Great Ocean Walk.

Ways to Visit

  • Short and sweet: Follow the Blanket Bay Walk to Point Lewis Lookout—about 2.25 km out-and-back with roughly 82 m of ascent, typically 30–60 minutes. Views open up over Blanket Bay along the way.
  • Longer ramble: Tackle the Blanket Bay to Parker Hill section of the Great Ocean Walk (~9.5 km return, ~314 m total gain, around 3–3.5 hours). You’ll cross Parker Inlet and can detour to Lower Parker River Falls and Mirage Falls near the inlet.

What You’ll See

Expect changing coastal vistas, coastal heath and wet-temperate forest textures, and—if luck strikes—wildlife. Koalas, kangaroos, and echidnas are regularly noted around Cape Otway, and birdlife is rich. From the coast, dolphins and, in season, migrating whales are possible.

Amenities & Rules

Facilities live at the Blanket Bay Day Visitor Area and campground: toilets, a rainwater tap for camp use (bring your own drinking water), picnic spots, and signed walking access. Fires are only in provided fireplaces; no dogs, generators, firearms, or drones without a permit. The beach is unpatrolled, and hazards include rough surf, slippery rocks, snakes, European wasps, and falling limbs. Beach access from some areas involves steps; there’s also a nearby boat ramp.

Trail Character & Conditions

Tracks here are generally well maintained, but formal viewpoints are limited, so vistas come and go between scrubby sections. Conditions change quickly in the Otways—even in summer—so pack layers and rain protection. Check current track notes and any inlet crossing advice before setting out.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, if you’re already at Blanket Bay or walking the Great Ocean Walk. The views are lovely but not a grandstand spectacle; treat it as a serene coastal pause with the option to extend your walk rather than a destination lookout.

Best Time to Visit

Go early or late for the best chance of wildlife activity and calmer, moodier light. Any time of year can work, but be weather-aware: showers and wind shifts are common, and coastal inlets can affect plans.

Pros

  • Wide coastal views over turquoise Blanket Bay
  • Easy walk from the Blanket Bay campground/day-use area

Cons

  • Very limited designated viewpoints; sightlines can be patchy
  • Parking at the campground/day-use area can be tight

Tips

  • Start from the Blanket Bay day-use carpark and follow signs toward Point Lewis.
  • Pack a light rain shell—weather turns quickly in the Otways, even in summer.
  • For a bigger day, extend to Parker Hill and scan Parker Inlet for birdlife.
  • Check inlet crossing and track advisories before you go.
  • Keep voices low at dawn or dusk to improve your odds of spotting wildlife.
