Overview
Tucked near Cape Otway, Blanket Bay is a quiet coastal nook where forest meets sea. It’s one of the park’s classic coastal stops, with a sandy pocket beach, broad rock platforms, and a mellow, away‑from‑the‑highway feel. The Great Ocean Walk passes through this section, so walkers and day‑trippers share the same lovely outlook.
What You’ll Do
- Wander the rock platforms, peer into tidal pools, and, on settled days, snorkel the clear shallows.
- Spread out for a picnic at the day‑use area, or pair a beach visit with short local walks such as the Katabanut Walk.
- If you’re walking a section of the Great Ocean Walk, this bay is a natural break point between Apollo Bay and Aire River.
Nature & Wildlife
Koalas are a regular treat around this coastline—look up into the eucalypts near camp and along access tracks. Birdlife is lively, and along this coast you may spot dolphins or, seasonally, migrating whales offshore.
Facilities & Rules
The day visitor area offers toilets, BBQ areas, and water taps; however, bring your own drinking water as on‑site supplies aren’t guaranteed potable. Standard park rules apply: no dogs, no fires outside designated facilities, no generators, and no drones without a permit. Typical coastal hazards here include slippery rocks, falling limbs, snakes, and European wasps. Swimming is unpatrolled and conditions can be rough—treat the ocean with respect.
If you’re camping next door at the Blanket Bay Campground, expect basic facilities (toilets and rainwater taps) and no mains power. Fires are only in shared fireplaces; bring your own firewood (no collection in the park).
Getting There
Access is via the Great Ocean Road to the Cape Otway area, then an unsealed road to the bay. It’s worth the detour for a day visit, but parking is limited, so plan accordingly. Great Ocean Walk hikers pass through or near the bay.
Best Time to Visit
Pick a clear, calm day for the most pleasant beach time and snorkeling. The Otways are famously cool and damp—pack rain layers even in summer. Arrive early on fine days to beat the small car park crowd.
