Hen Wallow Falls Trailhead

Overview

This is the starting point for the Hen Wallow Falls hike in the Cosby area, using the Gabes Mountain Trail. Expect a moderate, forested walk to a 90‑foot horsetail waterfall that’s narrow at the lip and fans wide across mossy rock. It’s a locals’ favorite when you want a waterfall without the chaos of Laurel or Rainbow.

What you’ll find at the trailhead

• Park at the Cosby Picnic Area near the Cosby Campground entrance, then walk about 100 yards along the entrance road to the signed Gabes Mountain Trail start.
• Flush restrooms are in the picnic/parking area; no facilities at the falls.
• A Great Smoky Mountains parking tag is required.
• No visitor center here, and dogs aren’t allowed on this trail.

The hike from here

• Distance/gain: roughly 4.3–4.5 miles round trip with about 900–965 feet of climb. The trail is well signed, forested, and can be muddy with roots and rocks.
• The steepest bit is the final 0.1-mile spur down to the base of the falls—save some legs for the climb back out.
• Along the way you’ll cross creeks, pass Messer/Bearneck Gap with traces of old homesteads, and then drop to the falls. Beyond the falls, the Gabes Mountain Trail continues into impressive old‑growth forest if you want to extend your day.

Wildlife and nature highlights

• Check the pool at the base for salamanders—this area is famously rich in them.
• Black bears forage in the Cosby backcountry; stay alert and follow park guidance.
• In winter, the waterfall often decorates itself with beautiful ice formations.

Best times to visit

• Crowds are typically lighter here than at the park’s marquee waterfalls; go on weekdays or start early for the quietest experience.
• For photography, avoid midday—sun angle at the base can be harsh. Flows are best after recent rain; in dry spells the falls thin out but remain pretty.

Quick logistics and tips

• Wear real traction; roots and rocks are constant. Trekking poles help on the steep spur.
• Don’t rely on cell service along the route.
• Allocate 2.5–4 hours round trip depending on pace and how long you linger at the falls.
