Overview

“Rose Lake Falls” is the name many hikers use for the slender, intermittent waterfall tucked near Rose Lake and the Cedar Falls corridor. It’s not a marquee stop like Cedar Falls, but it’s a satisfying bonus—especially after a good rain—when the falls turns into a delicate veil you can actually walk behind.

What You’ll See

Expect classic Hocking Hills sandstone scenery shaded by hemlocks, with moist, cool pockets that grow ferns and mosses. The falls itself is tall and typically low‑flow; on dry days it may be little more than a whisper. When it’s running, the grotto behind the water is the fun part.

How to Get There

  • Quickest route: Park at the main Cedar Falls lot, descend the steps to Cedar Falls, then follow the blue‑blazed Buckeye Trail about 0.6 mile downstream to the waterfall. It’s a short, moderate out‑and‑back with stone steps, occasional narrow ledges, and wet rock.
  • Scenic add‑on: Start from the Rose Lake Dam/group camp side, connect past the suspension bridge toward Cedar Falls, then continue to the waterfall and return the same way. Figure roughly 2.5–3.0 miles total, about 1–1.5 hours for most hikers, with ~275 feet of gain.

Trail Conditions & Safety

Trails here run through a hemlock forest on mostly wide, fairly flat tread, punctuated by bridges and stair sections. After rain—or freeze/thaw—surfaces get muddy and slick, especially bridges, stairs, and creekside rock. Keep kids close near cliffs and narrow ledges. After heavy rain, the best-view creek crossing can run higher than usual.

Wildlife

This corridor is lively with small mammals and songbirds; chipmunks and squirrels are common. Keep an eye out at dawn or dusk for white‑tailed deer moving quietly through the trees.

Best Time to Visit

Hit it after recent rain or in spring for the best flow. Weekends around Cedar Falls get busy—go early or on weekdays for a calmer walk. Trails are open year‑round, but expect mud or ice in colder or wet weather; traction helps a lot.

Pros

  • Quiet add‑on stop near Cedar Falls and Rose Lake
  • When flowing, you can walk behind the curtain of water

Cons

  • Intermittent; may be a trickle unless it’s recently rained
  • No dedicated parking or facilities and footing can be slick

Tips

  • Aim for the day after a soaking rain; skip it in droughty spells.
  • From Cedar Falls, follow the blue‑blazed Buckeye Trail ~0.6 mile downstream.
  • For a longer, quieter approach, start at Rose Lake Dam and link via the suspension bridge.
  • Wear grippy footwear; rocks, stairs, and ledges get slick when wet or icy.
  • Go early or on weekdays to dodge Cedar Falls crowding and find some solitude.
