This is Hocking Hills’ purple‑blazed loop to the park’s second‑largest recess cave, complete with whisper‑friendly acoustics and a seasonal waterfall. Expect tall Black Hand sandstone walls, shaded hemlock groves, and a photogenic “swinging” Hemlock Bridge along the way. The loop is generally 4.5–5 miles total, and most hikers spend about 2–3 hours.
Route and Distance
Most hikers start at the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center on SR 664 and follow the purple blazes through the one‑way loop. You can also reach the loop from Upper Falls via a blue‑blazed connector of about 1.5 miles, or drop in from behind Hocking Hills Lodge for a shorter visit to the cave and bridge. Once you commit to the one‑way system, you must complete the loop before returning.
Terrain and Difficulty
Rated moderate to moderately strenuous, the route packs steep stair sections, uneven rock, and occasional mud. Plan on roughly 500 feet of total gain. Footing can be slick after rain, and there are cliff edges and drop‑offs—this isn’t ideal for very young kids. Leashed pets are allowed, but the stairs and exposure make it a judgment call.
What You’ll See
The star is Whispering Cave—over 300 feet wide with a high domed ceiling—plus the namesake hush of voices that carry across the amphitheater. In wetter periods, a thin fall spills from the rim. Between features you’ll weave through classic gorge scenery: narrow passageways, rock overhangs, and stands of hemlock within mixed hardwood forest. Keep an eye out for deer, songbirds, salamanders, and bats.

Start early to beat mid‑day crowds and secure parking. Wear real hiking shoes—grippy soles matter on wet sandstone—and bring water. The waterfall shows best after recent rain; in dry spells it may be a trickle. Spring and fall deliver cooler temps and vibrant foliage, but the loop is worthwhile year‑round.
