Pros & cons
PROS
- One-way flow keeps traffic moving and minimizes bottlenecks.
- Cross the “swinging” Hemlock Bridge on the way to the cave.
- Clear purple blazes and kiosks make navigation straightforward.
CONS
- Seasonal waterfall can be underwhelming in dry spells.
- Cliff edges and steep stairs aren’t ideal for small kids or skittish dogs.
- Once committed, there are limited bailouts due to the one-way system.
Park at Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center (39.437176, -82.539667); restrooms and maps available. Do not attempt to park at the cave itself. Alternate start from the Upper Falls kiosk via blue blazes to the purple trail.
One-way trail—plan to complete the full 5 miles. Steep, uneven stairs, narrow ledges, and slick rock after rain. Stay on marked trails; no swimming or wading. Pets must be leashed (6 ft), well-behaved, and kept close near cliffs. Open 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
Overview
This is Hocking Hills’ headline loop if you like drama: a 300‑foot‑wide recess cave, a seasonal ~100‑foot waterfall, and the park’s signature Blackhand sandstone walls. It’s a 5.0‑mile, one‑way loop (you’ll hike it clockwise) that most hikers consider moderate thanks to steep stairs, uneven footing, and cliff edges. Plan on about 2–2.5 hours.
Route & What You’ll See
Start by parking at Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center and follow signs toward Cedar Falls to pick up the purple‑blazed Whispering Cave/Hemlock route. Partway in, a short 0.2‑mile out‑and‑back spur brings you into Whispering Cave’s massive alcove, where the acoustics give the cave its name. You’ll cross the “swinging” Hemlock Bridge, pass forested ravines and sandstone cliffs, and encounter creek sections and smaller falls before looping back toward Old Man’s Cave. An alternate start from the Upper Falls kiosk uses blue blazes for ~1.5 miles before meeting the purple trail; either way, the loop design brings you back near the Visitor Center.
Difficulty & Conditions
Expect inclines, lots of stairs, narrow ledges, and slick rock or mud after rain. Sturdy, grippy footwear is a must; trekking poles help on the long stair runs. The loop is manageable for most fit hikers but is not recommended for young children.
Geology & History
Whispering Cave is carved in Blackhand sandstone, shaped over millions of years by water erosion. It’s the park’s second‑largest recess cave—over 300 feet wide with a ceiling around 105 feet—and its acoustics are part of the fun. The area has long served as shelter and later as a natural storage space and early attraction.
Tips
- It’s a one‑way system—once you drop in, plan to complete the entire loop.
- Purple blazes mark the route; stay on signed trails. Start early to beat the crowds and to find parking.
- The waterfall is seasonal: impressive after rain, a trickle in dry spells.
- Leashed, well‑behaved pets are allowed; steep stairs and cliffs can be tough on skittish dogs.
Best Time to Hike
Trails are open from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Go early on weekdays for lighter crowds and cooler temps; visit after recent rain if the waterfall is a priority.
