A-Frame Bridge

Overview

A-Frame Bridge is a handsome wooden crossing perched above the Old Man’s Cave gorge. It’s a classic photo stop and a convenient connector between popular routes, so you’ll see plenty of hikers pausing here to look into the gorge and plan their next move.

Where it is and how to see it

Start from the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center and follow the signed paths a few minutes to the bridge. It sits where major routes meet, including the Gorge Overlook (red) and Grandma Gatewood Trail, making it effortless to fold into any Old Man’s Cave loop.

Why it’s worth a stop

Beyond the distinctive A‑frame silhouette, the bridge gives a quick, elevated peek into the sandstone gorge. Think of it as a scene-setter: a great first look before dropping to Upper Falls, Devil’s Bathtub, and the cave itself, or a finale as you climb back out.

Geology snapshot

The gorge here is carved in Mississippian‑age Black Hand Sandstone. Harder caprock and softer middle layers weather at different rates, sculpting the narrow gorges, slump blocks, overhangs, and recess caves that make this area so fun to explore.

Wildlife & etiquette

Cool, shaded gorges support hemlock and moisture‑loving plants. Keep an eye out for salamanders along the streams, white‑tailed deer and wild turkeys in the woods, and migrating woodland warblers in season. Copperheads occur in these hills—stay on trail and watch where you step.

Best time to visit

This is one of the park’s busiest spots. Go early morning or late day for thinner crowds and softer, more flattering light. Overcast days are excellent for photos. Trails are open dawn to dusk; follow posted rules and skip any creek‑wading.

Practical notes

Use the large parking area at the Visitor Center and hit the restrooms there before descending—there are no facilities at the bridge. From the bridge, you can commit to a short Old Man’s Cave loop or continue on the Grandma Gatewood Trail toward Cedar Falls and Ash Cave for a bigger day.
