Dogwood Trail

Overview

This short, shady forest loop strings together the Upper Dogwood (1.0 mile, one way) and Lower Dogwood (0.7 mile, one way) on North Mountain for about 1.7 miles total. Expect a well‑maintained natural surface with a few steeper, rocky, and occasionally narrow sections. It’s a great “quick nature fix” right above the bustle of Bathhouse Row.

What the hike is like

Grades are generally moderate with brief steeper pitches (some sections reach notably steep grades), and the tread can be 1–2 feet wide in spots. Surfaces are compacted dirt with rocky patches; after rain, expect water diversion features and potential mud. Benches appear along the way for breaks, and there’s a short bit where the route parallels or briefly follows the road.

Scenery and geology

You’ll walk under upland oak–hickory–pine forest with rare old‑growth pockets protected for generations—part of what makes this loop special so close to town. Keep an eye out on the Lower Dogwood’s western side for interesting sandstone boulders. Deer sightings are common.

Route options and connections

Upper Dogwood and Lower Dogwood can be linked in either direction. From Lower Dogwood, connectors like Arlington and Floral make it easy to build longer loops, and you can tie into Hot Springs Mountain Trail. From downtown, the Grand Promenade and its connectors provide a pleasant on‑foot approach to the Dogwood network if parking is tight up top.

Tips and logistics

Parking is limited at North Mountain Overlook (a common access for Upper Dogwood). Consider starting early or walking up from downtown via Arlington/Grand Promenade to avoid the parking shuffle. These trails are natural surface and not ADA compliant or stroller friendly. Carry water, wear shoes with traction, and expect ticks in season. Dogs are welcome on a 6‑foot leash; pack out waste. The trail system is open 5:00 AM–10:00 PM.

Best time to hike

Year‑round. The abundant shade makes this a comfortable warm‑weather choice. Go early for cooler temps, easier parking, and softer light filtering through the forest. After heavy rain, expect slick spots and minor mud.
