Goat Rock Trail

Overview

Goat Rock Trail delivers an outsized payoff for a short hike: a rocky novaculite outcrop with sweeping views over east Hot Springs, Indian Mountain, and the thermal springs’ recharge zone. From the North Mountain Overlook, it’s 1.1 miles one way (2.2 miles round trip) on a well‑maintained path. Expect gentle switchbacks, some rocky tread, and a short stair climb to the viewpoint. Most hikers will spend 30–75 minutes round trip.

Route Options

• Classic route: Start at the North Mountain Overlook lot; the trailhead is just south of the parking. Hike out-and-back to the Goat Rock Overlook for 2.2 miles total.
• From Gulpha Gorge: A shorter, steeper out-and-back via Dead Chief/Gulpha Gorge connections is about 1.3 miles total, with stepping stones across the creek and a steady climb to the overlook.
• Want a loop? Pair Goat Rock with Upper Dogwood for roughly 2.5 miles with added variety and additional viewpoints.

Trail Experience

Under a mixed canopy of ash, gum, persimmon, ponderosa pine, and oaks, the path uses stone water bars and switchbacks to ease the grade. Near the top, the tread turns rockier and narrows before a signed spur climbs stone steps to the overlook. The Goat Rock outcrop itself is novaculite—hard, quartz‑rich ridgeline rock common in these folded Ouachita “zig‑zag” mountains. From the railings, scan for Indian Mountain across Gulpha Gorge and the broader hills that funnel rain into the famous hot springs below.

Wildlife sightings lean small but fun: lizards dart across warm rocks, deer browse the understory, and in warm months you’ll want to keep an eye out for snakes, including cottonmouths near water.

Best Time to Hike

Open year‑round, the trail is accessible daily from early morning to evening (5:00 AM–10:00 PM). Spring and fall bring the best temps and color. To dodge crowds and midday heat on the exposed rock near the overlook, aim for before 9 AM or after 3 PM.

Logistics & Parking

Parking is limited at North Mountain Overlook, and the gate to drive up typically doesn’t open until around 8 AM. If you want a crack‑of‑dawn start, you can hike up from elsewhere in the trail system before the gate opens. Alternatively, start from Gulpha Gorge Campground, which has parking and amenities, and climb directly to the overlook via the connecting trails.

Safety & Tips

Wear sturdy shoes for rocky, uneven footing and the stair section. Carry water—heat builds fast on sunny days. Stay on developed tread or solid rock for footing, and watch for snakes in warm weather. The route is not ADA accessible.
