Set beside a real desert spring, this visitor center doubles as your gateway to the Oasis of Mara—palms, mesquite, and a short, flat paved loop with excellent interpretive signs. It’s an easy first stop to pick up maps, buy your pass, top off water, and immediately experience a true Mojave oasis without a big hike.

Wildlife

Oases pull in life: expect birds working the palms and mesquite, with seasonal spikes (watch the sky for vultures in migration). Lizards are common on warm days. Dawn and late afternoon are your best wildlife windows—bring binoculars.

History & Culture

“Mara” is the Serrano name for this place, honored in traditional songs and stories. Local tribes cultivated and relied on the oasis for millennia. In the 19th century a surveyor counted 29 palms here—hence Twentynine Palms. The site became park headquarters land in 1950 and still anchors the park’s story of people and water in the desert.

• For cooler temps and softer light, come early or late in the day—great for photos among the palms.
• Weekdays are mellow. Saturdays get busy late morning through midday; arrive before 10 am or after 2 pm to avoid the peak.
