Overview
This is a short, easy loop tucked into the Indian Cove corner of the park—a quieter, scenic pocket framed by dramatic granitic boulder piles. The loop is about 0.6 miles total, with minimal elevation change and a few steps. Expect classic Mojave flora like Joshua trees, cholla, and yucca, plus interpretive signs that break down local plants, animals, geology, and Indigenous seasonal use of the area.
Trail Experience
The tread is natural desert—packed dirt with pockets of loose sand (especially in wash sections) and some uneven rock. It’s family‑friendly and mellow, but do watch for unmarked “ghost” social paths; stick to the signed nature trail to keep the loop tight and stress‑free. Keep your eyes up for rabbits and birds, and if you like a little scrambling, the surrounding boulder fields invite casual, off‑trail clambering (not part of the official path). Compared with the park’s marquee stops, this corner is often serene.
Best Time to Hike
Spring shines after winter rains, when wildflowers pop and temps are comfortable. Fall and winter are reliably pleasant. Go early or late for cooler air and great light on the rock faces. Note that this area is sometimes closed during the hottest summer months, and even when open, shade is scarce—plan accordingly.
Logistics and Tips
Access is from Highway 62: drive about 2.5 miles down Indian Cove Road to the campground. The trail starts near the turnaround/large parking area at the far end of the road on the west side of the campground. Vehicles longer than 25 feet are restricted on this narrow road. There are restrooms in the campground. No pets on park trails. No day‑hiking permit is required; standard park entry fees apply. If you’re craving a longer challenge, the Boy Scout Trail also starts from the Indian Cove area, but for a leg‑stretcher with learning baked in, this nature loop is the move.
