Fern Pool (Jubara)

Overview

Set in the heart of Dales Gorge, Fern Pool (Jubara) is a sacred Banjima site and one of the park’s most serene swims—spring‑fed water spilling over a low curtain of rock into a fern‑rimmed pool. Come with quiet respect and you’ll understand why locals ask visitors to keep voices low and skip the cliff‑jumping.

What You’ll See

A tranquil amphitheatre of red rock, shade from paperbarks and ferns, and gentle twin cascades feeding a clear pool. There’s a timber deck/platform that makes getting in and out straightforward. If you sit still, tiny fish may nibble your toes—part of the charm.

Getting There

Park at the Fortescue Falls/Dales day‑use area. It’s about 800 m return down steel stairs to Fortescue Falls (Class 3), then a signed 300 m (Class 4) track along the gorge floor leads upstream to Fern Pool. Recent road upgrades mean the main connections to Dales Gorge are sealed, so 2WD access is now common.

Swimming and Etiquette

Swimming is allowed and there are no crocodiles here. The water stays cool year‑round and can be bracing in winter—fantastic after dusty gorge walks. This is a sacred place: enter quietly, keep noise down, and don’t jump from rocks.

Best Times to Visit

Peak season runs roughly April–September when walking temperatures are most pleasant. Hours are generally 6 am–6 pm. To dodge crowds and heat, be in the gorge early (before 9 am) or later in the afternoon; late morning to early afternoon is typically busiest.

Safety & Current Conditions

Rockpools can be deep and very cold; ease in and swim within your comfort. Flash flooding is possible after heavy rain—leave the gorge immediately if water rises. Check park alerts before you go; as of December 3, 2025, the track down to Circular Pool remains closed though the lookout is open. Around Dales Campground, dingoes are active—secure food and supervise kids.

Facilities & Practicalities

Toilets and shaded picnic tables are at the Dales/Fortescue day‑use area on the rim; there are no facilities at the pool itself. Bring all drinking water—there’s no potable water at the car parks. Paid showers are available at the Karijini Visitor Centre. Carry out rubbish, and expect standard park entry fees.
