Fortescue Falls sits in Dales Gorge and is the park’s only permanent waterfall, spilling around 20 meters into a fern-lined pool. From the Fortescue Falls car park a short lookout walk leads to the main descent: a sturdy staircase into the gorge and a final stretch over tiered rock to the falls. It’s a quick hit of classic Karijini—red cliffs, clear water, and a cool, shaded gorge floor.
Plan on about 0.9 miles total if you include the short connector to Fern Pool (roughly 0.5 miles return to the falls itself, plus about 0.4 miles return to Fern Pool). Most people spend 30–60 minutes here, or 1–2 hours if you add a swim.
This is a Class 3–4 style experience: steep steps, uneven rock, and slick surfaces if wet. The descent is straightforward but not wheelchair accessible. Take it slow on the rock shelves near the water.
Expect classic Pilbara geology—iron-rich, banded rock cut into terraces—with the soundtrack of running water. The falls drop into a broad pool great for a careful dip. Upstream, Fern Pool is a quieter, shaded oasis; it’s a sacred site for the Banjima people, so enter with respect and keep noise down.
May–September brings the most comfortable temperatures and soft light on the gorge walls. Go early for cooler air and fewer people; late afternoon also delivers lovely glow but leave time to climb out before dark.
Wear grippy shoes that handle wet rock, carry plenty of water, sun protection, and a small towel or dry bag for electronics. Facilities (toilets, shelters, picnic tables) sit right at the car park, and sealed roads make access easy. Swimming is allowed at the falls and at Fern Pool; there are no lifeguards.
Cliff edges, slippery rock, and cold water are the main hazards; don’t jump, and avoid the gorge when heavy rain threatens due to flash-flood risk. Dingoes are present—supervise kids and secure food. Pets aren’t allowed. The walk down to nearby Circular Pool is periodically closed due to rockfall; the lookout remains open—check park notices before you go.
