Overview

This is the park’s signature loop, combining the Gorge Rim Walk with the Dales Gorge Trail for a total of about 5.1 km (loop; roughly 3.2 miles). Expect a mix of easy rim strolling and rougher, Class 4 gorge walking with steps, rock‑hopping, and wet, polished stone near the water. The payoff: two swim‑friendly stunners—Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool—and constant red‑rock drama.

Route Snapshot

Most hikers start at the Fortescue Falls car park. A popular circuit is: rim lookouts toward Circular Pool, descend near Three Ways Lookout into the gorge, follow the creek past cascades to Fortescue Falls, detour to Fern Pool for a swim, then climb the staircase back to the car park. As of July 2024, the Circular Pool Trail is closed due to rockfalls, but the lookout is open; use the alternative descent near Three Ways instead. The loop length remains similar, but your timing depends on swim stops.

Difficulty & What It Feels Like

On paper it’s a Class 4 bush walk—meaning rough underfoot, steep sections, limited signage, and some exposure along cliff edges. Underfoot, expect uneven rock and slippery sections when wet. Fit first‑timers can handle it with care; leave prams and unsteady walkers behind. Children who hike regularly can manage it with close supervision on the steps and rock ledges.

Highlights

  • Fortescue Falls: a rare permanent waterfall in the region and an inviting place to cool off.
  • Fern Pool: spring‑fed, shaded, and serene—often the day’s favorite stop.
  • Circular Pool: icy even in warm weather; currently lookout‑only due to trail closure.
  • Big‑scale gorge scenery with banded iron formations, ferns along the creek line, and regular wildlife sightings.

Logistics & Facilities

Access is via sealed road to the Dales day‑use/Fortescue Falls car park, with toilets and picnic shelters. Dales Campground is close by. Mobile reception is limited to none, so plan meet‑ups and exit times before you drop in. National park entry fees apply. No pets and no fires anywhere in the park. Assisted wheelchair access is available to the Circular Pool lookout; the in‑gorge sections and Fortescue Falls steps are not accessible.

Best Time to Hike

May to September brings the cooler, clearer conditions this route deserves. Start early for softer light, fewer people at the falls, and cooler temps. Summer heat and storms can be severe; gorges may close after heavy rain and flash flooding is a real risk—avoid entering during or after rain and always check current park alerts before driving in.

Safety Tips

Rocks near water are slick even when dry; step deliberately. Stay well back from cliff edges. Roads and tracks can close after rain. Carry ample water (plan on several liters per person on warm days), sun protection, insect repellent, snacks, a small first‑aid kit, and a whistle. Pack out all rubbish.

Pros

  • Two excellent swim stops (Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool) on one loop
  • Lookout access (including assisted access at Circular Pool) for non-gorge hikers

Cons

  • Circular Pool Trail remains closed, altering the classic floor traverse
  • Exposure along cliff edges and slick rock makes it tricky for height‑averse hikers

Parking

Park at the Fortescue Falls car park (Dales day‑use area); sealed‑road access with toilets nearby.

Caution

Class 4 terrain with steep steps, loose footing, and slippery rock near water; cliff edges; flash‑flood risk during/after rain; limited mobile reception; roads and tracks may close after heavy rain.
