Overview

Fortescue Falls is the park’s classic oasis: a 20‑metre cascade stepping down iron‑red rock into a wide, clear pool. The gorge here feels like a natural amphitheatre—cooler, greener, and more sheltered than the sun‑blasted plains above.

Getting There & The Walk

Base yourself at the Fortescue Falls carpark on Dales Road. It’s an easy ~150 m stroll to a panoramic lookout, then a stairway with handrails drops into Dales Gorge to the pool. Walking time is short, but with swims and photos most visitors spend about two hours here. From the base, Fern Pool (Jubura) is roughly 300 m upstream on a signed track, and the Gorge Rim Trail links viewpoints between Fortescue Falls and Circular Pool Lookout.

Swimming & Safety

Swimming is allowed at the falls and is a highlight—just expect slick rock at the edges and take your time getting in. Start early, carry plenty of water (a good rule is about 1 litre per person per hour), and avoid entering gorges if rain is forecast or within two hours of sunset due to flash‑flood risk. You may notice narrow seams of blue asbestos in the gorge walls—don’t touch or disturb rock or mineral material.

Nature & Scenery

As you descend, the vegetation shifts to a surprisingly lush, almost tropical feel. Expect bees and dragonflies skimming the water, plus lizards and birds along the ledges. Around the gorge you’ll see figs, snappy gums, and seasonal wildflowers framing the banded, iron‑rich cliffs.

Culture & Etiquette

Fortescue Falls sits on Country jointly managed with Traditional Owners. Nearby Fern Pool (Jubura) is culturally significant—keep voices low and please don’t jump into the water.

Geology Snapshot

These near‑horizontal, iron‑rich layers were laid down billions of years ago and carved into today’s deep chasms by persistent erosion. The falls tumble in tiers over these ancient bands into a permanent, spring‑fed pool.

Best Time to Visit

Dry‑season months (May–October) are the sweet spot for hiking and swimming. Any time of day is photogenic, but mornings beat the heat and the crowds. As of December 2025, the walking trail down to Circular Pool is closed due to rain damage and rockfalls; the lookout remains open.

Quick Plan

  • Park at Fortescue Falls carpark, visit the lookout, then descend for a swim.
  • Continue ~300 m to Fern Pool for a quieter soak, then return via the stairs or add part of the Gorge Rim Trail for big views.

Facilities

Toilets are available at the Fortescue Falls carpark; the nearby Dales Day‑use Area has toilets, shaded picnic tables, and info signage.

Pros

  • Only permanent, spring‑fed waterfall with a broad natural swimming pool
  • Short path to a great lookout and easy add‑on to Fern Pool

Cons

  • Steep stair-and-rock descent; slick edges near the water
  • Very popular—arrive early to beat crowds and heat

Tips

  • Start at the Fortescue Falls carpark: lookout first, then take the stairs down.
  • Bring grippy water shoes and move slowly on wet rock at the pool edge.
  • Carry at least 1 L of water per person per hour and start early in the day.
  • Pack out all rubbish—there are no bins; snacks are great between swims.
  • Add Fern Pool ~300 m upstream; keep voices low and don’t jump.
