Shelving Rock Mountain is the mellow, crowd-pleasing hike on Lake George’s east shore. The route follows an old carriage road with switchbacks—think wide tread, steady grade, and room to walk side‑by‑side. Expect roughly 1.5–2 miles each way (about 3.3–3.4 miles round-trip) and around 600 feet of gain.
The View (don’t stop too soon)
The true summit itself isn’t the showstopper. Continue a short distance beyond (about 100 yards) to reach the overlook—your reward is a sweeping Lake George panorama with islands and surrounding Adirondack hills. It’s the photo spot people come for, but many turn around too early.
What makes it special
You can do a "triple play" here: hike the mountain, pop over to Shelving Rock Falls (a short, scenic waterfall hike), and drop to the lakeshore at Log Bay—all from the same corridor. Families and new hikers love how approachable it is without sacrificing views.
Wildlife & nature
Expect chipmunks, squirrels, songbirds, and the occasional deer along the shady forested trail. Amphibians favor the moist woods, and there’s an active beaver pond along the approach road. Black bears inhabit the wider forest but aren’t commonly seen on these busy paths.
Getting there & logistics
Access is via Shelving Rock Road—narrow, partly unpaved, with blind curves. Drive slowly. There are multiple designated parking areas and no roadside parking; on popular weekends they fill quickly. There are no restrooms or water at the trailheads, so plan accordingly.
Pair it with Shelving Rock Falls
The falls are a favorite add-on. Rocks can be slick, especially after rain, and water shoes help if you plan to wade. In summer, the lakeshore near Log Bay is a great cool‑down spot.
Best time to visit
- Early mornings or weekdays to beat crowds and secure parking.
- Spring brings wildflowers; fall foliage is excellent. Summer afternoons are busiest, especially near the lake.
