Why this hike

If you’re after a low-key backcountry feel without chasing a summit, Fishbrook Pond delivers. The path winds through classic southern Adirondack forest—roots, rocks, and occasional wet stretches—to a tranquil pond tucked between Sleeping Beauty and Black Mountain. Expect more loons-and-lapping-water vibes than big vista payoffs.

Route and distance

From the Dacy Clearing approach, it’s about 2.6–3 miles one way to the pond (roughly 5.5–6 miles total out and back). Starting lower from the Hogtown/Shelving Rock access adds distance, landing closer to 3.5–4 miles one way. Elevation gain is steady and moderate overall (on the order of a thousand feet), with a few muddy, waterlogged sections after rain. There’s a signed junction near the Sleeping Beauty turn—watch for the left toward Fishbrook.

What you’ll see and do

The forested approach passes Bumps Pond and leads to Fishbrook Pond’s quiet shoreline. Anglers target the pond (shoreline can be brushy, so casting takes finesse), and strong swimmers appreciate the clear, cool summer water. Keep an eye out for beavers and deer, and enjoy the glacially carved terrain—rolling ridges, rocky outcrops, and kettle-like ponds typical of the area.

Camping notes

There are designated campsites at and around the pond, including lean-tos. As of August 2025, the North Lean-to at Fishbrook Pond is reported burned and the site closed—check current conditions before banking on it. Follow NYSDEC rules: use designated sites where provided and respect setbacks from water if you’re not in a designated spot.

Trail feel and crowds

Despite the broader area’s popularity, this route often stays pleasantly quiet, especially beyond Bumps Pond or outside peak hours. It’s a moderate, steady hike rather than a thigh-burner—good for fit beginners ready for uneven footing and some mud.

Tips and tricks

  • Waterproof boots aren’t optional here; expect wet tread after rain.
  • Cell service is unreliable—download offline maps or bring a paper map.
  • Horse use is allowed on some segments; expect churned, muddier tread at times.
  • Leave No Trace: don’t count on found firewood; pack out what you pack in.

Best time to hike

Late spring through early fall is prime (May–October). Summer brings warm swimming temps and long days; autumn lights up the hardwoods around the ponds. Winter travel is possible on snowshoes but can be demanding with ice and deep snow. For peace and easier fishing, go early, late, or on weekdays.

Pros

  • Designated backcountry sites and lean-tos at a serene pond setting
  • Clean, swimmable water in summer with a true wilderness feel

Cons

  • Limited views compared to nearby peaks—this is a pond-focused hike
  • Trail can be very muddy and wet after rain

Parking

Park at the Dacy Clearing parking area (Shelving Rock/Hogtown access). Watch for the signed junction where you turn left toward Fishbrook Pond.

Caution

Expect mud and standing water after rain; cell service is unreliable; signage at the Sleeping Beauty/Fishbrook junction can be easy to miss; confirm current status of the Fishbrook Pond North Lean-to (reported closed after a fire).
