If you’re after a mellow Adirondack backcountry feel without the crowds, this loop around Bumps Pond delivers. It’s a moderate, rocky 4.9-mile loop (total) through mixed hardwood–conifer forest to a tranquil pond with plenty of dragonflies and butterflies in warm months. Expect solitude, forested hills, and a classic wildland vibe rather than big summit views—unless you tack on a nearby peak.

From the Dacy Clearing Parking Area (reached via Hogtown Road), the trail follows sections of old carriage roads and climbs steadily to the pond—about 1.6 miles with roughly 850 feet of gain to reach the water. If you do the full loop, plan on around 1,100 feet of total elevation gain. The tread is often rocky and can be wet or muddy after rain or in spring. Wayfinding is generally straightforward, but there are several intersections that lead to Fishbrook Pond and other routes—carry a map or GPS so you don’t wander farther than planned.

The draw here is quiet scenery: shaded woods, open glimpses across the pond, and a good chance to see insect life buzzing over the water on calm days. Bring bug spray in summer; the shoreline can be buggy. If you want a bigger payoff view, consider extending to Sleeping Beauty Mountain from this network—the open summit there adds wide panoramas but changes the day from a pond ramble to a more summit-focused outing.

Best time to hike: late spring through early fall. Summer gives long days (and bugs). Fall shines with foliage and usually firmer footing. Winter travel is possible but the route isn’t maintained—expect ice/snow and plan accordingly.

Pro tips: wear waterproof boots, start early for maximum calm at the pond, and keep an eye on junction signs. This loop is ideal when you want a quieter alternative to the area’s headline peaks, or as a nature-forward warm‑up before linking bigger objectives nearby.

Pros

  • Noticeably quieter than nearby summits, great for solitude
  • Easy add‑on options to Fishbrook Pond or Sleeping Beauty

Cons

  • Footing can be wet and muddy after rain or in spring
  • Multiple intersections can confuse first‑timers without a map

Parking

Park at Dacy Clearing via Hogtown Road; the loop starts from this trailhead hub.

Caution

Rocky, sometimes muddy footing; bugs near the pond in summer; several intersecting trails—carry a map/GPS. Winter travel is not maintained and can be icy/snowy.
