The Pinnacle

Overview

A local favorite just outside Bolton Landing, The Pinnacle delivers outsized views for minimal effort. From the rocky ledges at the top you get sweeping looks over Lake George, including the Tongue Mountain range and The Narrows—exactly the postcard scene people come here for.

• Distance: a little over 2 miles round trip via the red-blazed out-and-back trail
• Elevation gain: roughly 480 feet
• Terrain: well-marked dirt and rocky sections with a small bridge, mostly shaded forest and a few switchbacks
• Summit: multiple rock outcrops and a bench with wide, 270-degree views

Why It’s Worth Your Time

This is the definition of high reward for low to moderate effort. It’s close to Bolton Landing, the trail is straightforward, and the views are some of the best in the area for the time you’ll invest. If you want more, the blue trail to Bradley’s Lookout adds another excellent vantage in the same preserve.

What to Expect on the Hike

You’ll start from the parking area on Edgecomb Pond Road and climb steadily through mixed forest. The path is generally easy to follow, but rocks can be slick after rain and the trail can get muddy in wet spells. At the top, plan to linger—there are several natural ledges to spread out and soak in the lake-and-mountain panorama.

Wildlife

It’s a wooded preserve setting where hikers commonly encounter typical Adirondack forest life such as birds, deer, and small mammals. No specific or notable wildlife hazards are called out in reports.

Practicalities

• Parking is limited and roadside parking is not allowed—arrive early on weekends.
• There are no restrooms or water; bring what you need.
• Cell service is poor to nonexistent—save maps for offline use.
• Hikeable year-round; in winter, traction like microspikes or snowshoes may be needed depending on conditions.

Best Time to Visit

Go early morning or on weekdays for a quieter summit and easier parking. Clear days maximize the big-lake views, and fall foliage makes this overlook especially photogenic. Shoulder seasons and winter can be great if you’re prepared for conditions.
