This is an easy, view-first hike that follows a wide former railbed to Lakeview Overlook above Lake Mead’s Boulder Basin. Expect huge lake-and-desert panoramas and a dash of history thanks to multiple rail tunnels used during Hoover Dam construction. If you’re chasing an approachable outing with big payoff, this is it.

Route and Stats

Plan on about 6.4 miles total out and back (3.2 miles each way) with roughly 200 feet of gentle gain on railroad-grade gravel. Most of the route is broad, flat, and exposed. Typical round-trip time is around 2.5–3 hours, depending on pace and photo stops.

Getting There and Parking

Start from the Historic Railroad Trailhead near the Lake Mead visitor center area on the Boulder City side (ample parking and restrooms). There’s also a small drive-up pullout at Lakeview Overlook itself with very limited spaces that turn over quickly. Standard Lake Mead National Recreation Area entrance fees apply; federal interagency passes are accepted.

What You’ll See

Five large tunnels frame ever-bigger views of Boulder Basin and the Hoover Dam corridor. Look for Mojave Desert standouts like creosote and brittlebush along the sandy slopes. Wildlife commonly reported here includes roadrunners and Gambel’s quail, with the occasional desert tortoise. Geology fans: the basin is a structural low filled with sediments laid down roughly 15–4 million years ago, with today’s Colorado River carving the landscape you’re looking across.

Best Times to Hike

Start at sunrise or late afternoon for cooler temps, softer light, and fewer people. Fall through spring is the sweet spot; summer is brutally hot with minimal shade. Midday light tends to wash out the views—time your hike for low-angle light if photography matters.

Safety and Tips

Heat is the main hazard. There’s no water on the route, so carry plenty, wear sun protection, and don’t underestimate warm shoulder-season days. Stay on the main path through the tunnels and heed any posted closures. Lake levels fluctuate, which can change the look of the shoreline. Pets are allowed on leash—bring extra water for them.
