Overview

This rugged desert classic drops through volcanic narrows to the Colorado River, then climbs a slot to Arizona Hot Spring before closing the loop. The full loop is about 5.75 miles total and rated strenuous thanks to loose wash walking, mild scrambling, and a 15–20 foot metal ladder beside a pour‑off. Expect wet feet in the slot near the springs and short sections of mild exposure along the river connector.

Route Breakdown

From the pullout off US‑93, you’ll hike down a broad wash, pass under the highway, and enter White Rock Canyon’s colorful, narrowing walls. After roughly 2.7–2.8 miles you reach the Colorado River with big views into Black Canyon. A signed singletrack traverses along the river bluffs to Hot Spring Canyon with a few short ups/downs. The slot tightens, water appears, and a metal ladder climbs next to a small cascade to reach the spring pools. Continue upstream to rejoin the main wash and return to the trailhead. Variations include an out‑and‑back to the springs via Hot Spring Canyon (shorter but steeper return) and a signed spur to Liberty Bell Arch that adds about 3 miles round‑trip.

Difficulty and Hazards

This is true Mojave hiking: unmaintained wash, loose gravel, occasional scrambling, wading in the slot, and the ladder climb. The springs have posted warnings about Naegleria fowleri—do not submerge your head or let water enter your nose. Flash floods are a real hazard in narrow canyons; avoid if storms threaten. There is no drinking water at the trailhead; pit toilets are located along the river downstream of the springs.

Best Time to Hike

Go in the cool season. For heat safety, NPS seasonally closes White Rock Canyon, Arizona Hot Springs, and related routes roughly May 15–September 30 each year; during closures, land access is not allowed. The rest of the year, start early. Weekday mornings see fewer people; cool, clear winter days bring the best comfort and light.

What You’ll See

Volcanic tuffs and ash layers sculpt tight narrows that open dramatically onto the turquoise Colorado. Along the route, look for hardy desert shrubs like indigo bush and Mormon tea adding texture to the canyon. The hot spring flows through a narrow slot, forming a series of human‑sized soaking pools typically around the low 100s °F.

Gear and Tips

Bring 2–3+ liters of water per person, electrolytes, sun protection, and snacks. Grippy hiking shoes plus sandals or water shoes make the wet slot more pleasant. Light gloves can help on the ladder. Carry an offline map—cell service is unreliable—and practice Leave No Trace: don’t alter the pools or block flow, and pack out all trash and waste.

Parking and Fees

Park at the signed pullout on the Arizona side of US‑93 (before milepost 4), then follow the wash under the highway. A park entrance pass is required; payment is cashless. Keep proof of admission with your vehicle.

Pros

  • Combo of canyon trekking, river scenery, and a natural hot spring in one loop
  • Metal ladder and mild scrambles add just enough spice without true technical climbing

Cons

  • Seasonal land closure May 15–September 30 eliminates prime summer access
  • Loose wash walking and a wet slot can be tedious or uncomfortable for some hikers

Parking

Signed pullout just off US‑93 on the Arizona side (before milepost 4); start in the wash, pass under the highway; no drinking water at the trailhead.

Caution

Extreme heat and seasonal closure (about May 15–Sept 30); unmaintained wash, mild exposure, and a 15–20 ft ladder; wet slot near the springs; flash‑flood risk; Naegleria fowleri—do not submerge your head; check NPS alerts and carry ample water.
