Overview
A quick, worthwhile roadside stop that delivers a front-row look at one of the park’s wildest geologic stories. From this signed pullout, you’re staring at the sharp plug-dome peaks of Chaos Crags and the sprawling boulder field below known as the Chaos Jumbles. It’s a short stop with a big payoff if you like understanding the landscape as much as photographing it.
What You’ll See
- A clean sightline to the Crags, the jumbled boulder field, and on clear days, Lassen Peak.
- An interpretive panel that makes sense of the chaos you’re looking at.
- In season, roadside wildflowers and views across recovering burn areas along the scenic drive.
Why It’s Unique
Around 1660, a series of massive rockfall avalanches thundered off the dacite domes here. The largest covered roughly 2.5 square miles, with rock depths reported over 130 feet in places. Freeze–thaw cycles weakened the domes over time, and once the rock let go, trapped air beneath the moving debris reduced friction, letting it flow far and fast. The avalanche even dammed a stream, helping create nearby Manzanita Lake.

This is a simple pullout: you’ll find cellular signal, a scenic photo spot, and an interpretive exhibit. There are no restrooms or water here—plan to use facilities in nearby developed areas like Manzanita Lake.

Make it a 5–15 minute pause during the park’s scenic drive, or combine it with nearby stops around Manzanita Lake. Hikers can seek bigger views on trails toward the Crags area, but expect steady climbing before an easy return.
Best Time to Visit
Anytime the park road is open works; clearer days reward you with Lassen Peak in the backdrop. Winter road closures can limit or lengthen access, so check conditions in the colder months.
