Surprise Creek Falls

Overview

About Surprise Creek Falls

Why stop

  • Clear rock pools for swimming
  • Tight red-rock gorge

Heads up

  • Rough 4WD access
  • Wet-season track difficulty
Surprise Creek sits deep in the southern half of the park, off the 44 km Reynolds River 4WD track that runs between Tolmer and Wangi Falls and links to Daly River Road. Water drops over a dark rock ledge into a plunge pool held in a narrow gorge of rust-red, weathered stone, with a second pool close by. The appeal is the setting plus the fact that 4WD-only access makes this a quieter, less developed alternative to the park's sealed-road stops.

Getting there

4WD only. The Reynolds River track is long and rough, includes creek crossings, and the final access track into Surprise Creek is unsealed and rough as well. Travel with recovery gear, enough fuel and water, and someone comfortable driving the conditions. A park visitor pass is required. Plan around the seasons: dry-season travel is generally easier, while through the wet the track can turn muddy and slippery and crossings become more difficult.

From the car park it is a short, easy walk to the water, with a small climb around a rock ledge to reach the pools. Most people come to swim, cool off and sit on the rock shelves. The gorge walls are tight and the light is best early or late in the day, when the red rock warms up and the pool holds shade and reflection. Dry-season vegetation here is sparse rather than lush, so bring a hat and expect open sun on the rock.

How it compares to the headline fallsWangi, Florence and Buley are sealed-road stops with big car parks and easy access.

Wangi, Florence and Buley are sealed-road stops with big car parks and easy access. Surprise Creek asks for a commitment of time and vehicle instead, and what you get is a smaller, less developed pair of pools in a tighter gorge. If you have already decided to drive the Reynolds River track for Blyth Homestead and Tjaynera Falls, this is the stop that most rewards the effort.

There is a basic category B campground beside the visitor area, one of the more isolated in the park. The verified facilities sit there rather than down at the water, and they amount to a tin-shed pit toilet and designated barbecue areas. Treat the pools themselves as a bush swimming spot with nothing laid on, so carry in what you need for the day and carry your rubbish out.

Swimming safelyThis is a designated swimming site, and it still deserves respect.

This is a designated swimming site, and it still deserves respect. Conditions can change rapidly with flash flooding and electrical storms, and both depth and current can overwhelm young or inexperienced swimmers. Watch children closely, look the water over before getting in, and stay out when rain has been through. Glass is not permitted within 10 m of the water. Roadside creeks and the Reynolds River itself are not safe or monitored swimming spots.

Honest drawbacksThe drive is the main cost.

The drive is the main cost. The track is long, rough and unsuitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles, and the return trip takes a good part of a day. The pools are modest in scale next to the park's big-name falls, so if you want a quick swim on a sealed-road loop, look elsewhere. Come for the gorge and the water, and give the trip the time and preparation it needs.
